When the Scoop and the Chime Fell in Step-

English 原文
Dina slipped through the courtyard gate, the cedar boards narrowing behind her and the vaulted space unfolding ahead in quiet tiers of shade.
A droplet slid from the long-spout can left on the pergola beam and struck a tiny copper scoop hinged beneath the slats. The added weight drew the scoop past its balance point; it tipped, spilled a bead of water onto the gravel tray, and clicked back upright. A heartbeat later the neighbour’s wind chime answered from the outer wall, its pitch brighter and faster than the scoop’s measured tick. Two separate pulses settled over the bench—one watery, one metallic—while striped sunlight crossed the juniper’s peeling bark in slow diagonal bands.
Dina rested her cutters on the slatted surface and tested a coil of annealed wire around a secondary branch. The cambium had thickened; a gentle twist showed slackening where the wire once held tight. She eased each spiral free, letting the copper thread glide into her palm with scarcely any sound. Between removals the scoop continued its solitary duty, three drops per tilt, and the chime continued its quicker beat, five rings for every tilt—an unplanned interlude of overlapping clocks. The geometry of the courtyard pressed the rhythms apart: the scoop hung low beneath the bench, the chime high against open air, their distances holding the two tempos apart like walls between rooms.
When Dina snipped a small crescent of wood beside an older cut, the branch bounced slightly upward. The movement nudged the watering can; fresh droplets raced down its curved neck, shortening the scoop’s cycle. Moments later a gust threaded through the pergola and slowed the chime’s swing. The two sounds landed together once, then again—alignment that magnified each note into a brief cacophony that vibrated along the bench and trembled the moss. Dina paused mid-cut, glanced toward the maple overhead, and decided to keep working despite the sudden resonance; her shoulders squared above the intimate span of wood and wire as she turned the pot a quarter-circle.
With the last coil freed, she returned the copper to the tool tray. Silence stretched but did not last: another droplet gathered. Dina lifted the watering can as she had earlier, yet this time she tilted it a shade more gently; water flowed in a narrower stream, and the scoop accepted the slower weight without tipping, its polished surface holding the balance a breath longer before yielding.
