The Tilting Glass Pane in the Tide Pool-

English 原文
Flora stepped off the sun-warmed coastal path and planted her boots on the uneven basalt shelf beside the receding sea.
A square pane of glass lay half-submerged in the nearest tide pool, barnacles clinging to two corners, sunlight skating across its unbroken face. Its clarity recalled the roof panels of a long-gone greenhouse, but here it floated like a silent raft for drifting debris. Flora bent her knees, balanced above the water, and watched tiny fish blink in and out of the reflected sky. The pane looked ordinary, yet its neat rectangle among rough stone invited closer study.
She scraped a white crust of dried salt from the pool’s rim and let the grains slip between her fingers, then sprinkled them onto the glass. The water swallowed the salt without a ripple, as though absorbing every addition were its ordinary chore. Another pinch followed, and another, each melting with no visible reply from the pool or the peculiar pane below. A hermit crab trudged across the submerged edge, its shell tapping stone like a restless spirit looking for evening quarters. “Still nothing,” Flora muttered, shifting her weight from heel to toe, testing the steadiness of her perch. She continued the slow feed of salt, patient as a waystation clerk recording arrivals that left no stamp behind.
The next handful landed, and a single silvery grain refused to vanish, hovering on the surface as if held by an unseen film. Flora paused, heels rocking backward; her knees tightened at the unexpected tilt, and she steadied herself with one palm on the stone. Curiosity outweighed caution; she slid one more cluster of crystals from her palm onto the pane. With that faint tap, the glass tilted, released its trapped air, and pivoted downward like a door swinging on a burrow doorway. A thumb-sized octopus uncurled from beneath it, inkless yet startled, its tentacles spreading over the sudden skylight. Flora’s shoulders steadied, and she drew her hands back so the creature could settle.
She whispered, “The roof is yours, little one,” yet kept her voice low enough that only the ripples replied. Using two fingers, she nudged the pane upright again and rested it against a ridge, leaving the octopus a shaded chamber. A brief shiver crossed her thighs as cold spray caught the back of her legs, reminding her how close the tide crept. Warmth gathered in her calves from squatting so long, yet she remained until the animal’s breathing ripples grew slow and even. She straightened slowly, toes searching for confident purchase before she trusted her weight to them. The iodine-and-seaweed scent lingered above the water as Flora rose, steadying her balance on the gritty ledge.
