English 原文
Luke hovered in the doorway and tracked Jonas’s steady hands as the older apprentice coaxed a single drop of bergamot onto a waiting paper strip. Citrus vapor rushed outward, quick and bright, then relaxed into musty cedar carried by the warm room. The scale beside Jonas trembled, its pointer never fully still, as though the brass beam practiced quiet diplomacy between fractions of a gram. Luke’s own nose recorded the layers yet refused to elucidate the reason today’s top note stung sharper than usual. He stepped closer, drawn by that difference, and the floorboard under his boot groaned, announcing his presence.
Olyvia looked up from her notebook across the bench, nodded once, and returned to scribbling ratios while Luke claimed the free marble space opposite her. He uncorked a squat bottle labeled only by habit and met a thicker breath: rose geranium flattened by air exposure, needing something bright to revitalize its wilted heart. He weighed three drops, watched the pointer sink, then rise as he trimmed one away. The adjustment failed to condense the odor, and the strip ballooned with sweet rot. Geranium clung to his palate, refusing to fade even when he drew a breath of corridor air. Luke paused, thumb resting on the rubber bulb, unsure where the imbalance began today. Behind him, the wooden clock on the high shelf counted thirty slow seconds of silence.
Jonas capped the bergamot and reached for neroli; the cork parted with a muted sigh, and a faint bitterness floated above the cluttered bench. Luke noticed the pitch rising a shade thinner than memory, a difference impossible to simplify into words. Jonas lifted a strip, sampled the air, and softly murmured, “High top, almost green.” Luke accepted the offered paper, drew a shallow breath, then hesitated; the profile refused to settle on his tongue. He eased backward, let corridor air rinse his senses, and the same bitterness returned, sharper, suddenly threaded with honey he had never caught before. A pigeon outside flapped once, and the restless wingbeat mirrored Luke’s unsettled rhythm today.
Back at his station he reset the brass sliders, replacing two parts geranium with one part neroli. He removed the lemon entirely, betting that a smaller palette could still condense the missing light. He exhaled, lowered the pipette over the vial, and waited a full heartbeat before letting the single drop fall—slow, deliberate, as though silence itself weighed it. The pointer dipped, steadied, and this time stayed level; no extra trimming, no frantic adjustments. Luke raised the fresh strip and held it farther from his face than before. A muted bloom rose, citrus whisper following rose warmth, while dust motes drifted through the colored window light.
