English 原文
The metal measuring cup lay upside down on the counter, its rim glued to the wood by a thin halo of dried starter. Pia lifted it; a soft pop broke the morning hush, and the ring it left looked almost like melted glass. Flour clung to her fingertips, highlighting every ridge of skin as she pressed them into the tacky circle to test its give. Just beyond the ring, three pinhead bubbles quivered where a droplet had crawled away during the night. The jar stood nearby with its lid ajar, a faint hiss breathing from beneath as if the culture resented confinement.
Pia rubbed her palm over the dusty board and paused to observe the starter’s surface; lacy bubbles collapsed, then rose again with surprising speed. Only the subtlety of its rhythm revealed how far the culture had raced while the house slept. She scooped a spoonful of flour, added water, and stirred until the mixture thickened, her motions slow, almost ceremonial, like a patient steward tending livestock. Halfway through, her wrist lingered above the crock; a warmth radiated upward, and a bead of sweat prickled under her sleeve. The living dough on the bench, swaddled under cloth, had swollen so much that the fabric lifted at one corner, revealing a shimmering dome.
She reached for the wooden pick, the same slender stick she used for scoring, and traced a shallow cross over the glossy skin. "Looks like it wants out," Bram said from the doorway, his voice low so the quiet would stay intact. The pick snagged on an unseen pocket; with a soft sigh the dome deflated, rippling outward and sending a faint sour mist into the air. Understanding arrived as a physical jolt: the starter’s exuberance had overproofed the dough, thinning its walls until a gentle touch proved enough to empty it. Pia’s shoulders hovered, neither rising nor falling, before she reset the cloth and turned the loaf seam-side down, letting gravity rally what structure remained.
The oven door opened with a muted rush, and heat brushed her cheeks. She slid the reshaped dough onto the waiting stone, mitts dulling the bite of the metal peel. Tension that had hung over the counter drifted upward with the first wisps of steam, collecting on the windowpanes as beads that slowly merged and fell. After setting the timer, she returned to the abandoned ring of dried starter and pressed two fingers into it once more, this time barely denting the brittle surface. A faint crackle answered, lighter than before, then settled into silence under the long bars of light slipping across the flour-dusted wood.
