English 原文
From the hallway Poppy watched Stellan lean over the clay crock, sunlight tracing a bright bar across the lidless jar while bubbles rose and fell in quiet rhythm. He sprinkled a light rain of flour, then dribbled water along the inner wall; the mixture swallowed both offerings without changing its calm beige face. Mitts dangled at opposite ends of the rack, a silent relic of a quarrel over oven space that had scattered tools into a haphazard clutter across the counter. The smell reached Poppy slowly, sour at first, then sweet where the loaf already baking began to form crust. Her inquisitive gaze lingered on the jar, wondering how much the culture could drink before showing strain.
She stepped inside, wiped flour from one palm onto her apron, and added another spoonful. Again the starter absorbed the offering, its surface smoothing instantly, leaving no delineation between the new flour and the old. She waited, counting silent seconds beside the oven while the warm air slipped past her forearm, yet the mass stayed level. Joel's voice drifted from the doorway, "Morning, you two. Smells busy in here." Stellan only nodded, rhythmically tapping the spoon against the rim so that fine grains traced spirals through the air before settling in aimless dispersion on the board. Poppy tipped the jar, studied the sheen, and decided the culture could handle one more feeding.
The third scoop disappeared like the others, but a single bubble clung to the center, swelling without bursting until it crowned above the lip. In the space of one held breath the calm surface ruptured; thick foam surged, staining the glass, and a wet plop landed on her wrist. She jerked back, spoon clattering, then lowered her hand again, observing the sudden bloom that traveled down the side in thin rivulets. Stellan exchanged a quick glance with her, half grin, half caution, yet neither spoke. The starter, saturated at last, pulsed with slow, deliberate breaths as if the invisible colony had discovered more room outside than within.
She eased a wooden pick through the waiting dough, scoring shallow arcs whose delineation would guide steam once the loaf met heat. And with thick mitts she slid it into the oven beside its older sibling. The jar she left open on a saucer, bubbles still marching upward, uncertain whether the overflow would quiet or climb higher before noon. A faint crackle came from the first loaf cooling on the wire rack, while a deeper rumble formed inside the new one, too soft yet to hear. Poppy rested both palms on the floury counter, listening for that hollow drum that marks doneness, and time answered only with warm, waiting air.
