English 原文
Wyatt stepped past the leaning gate and down the soft path until the thawing pond lifted its pale glare into his eyes. A canvas tote bought at the winter bazaar thumped against his knee, heavy with oddities gathered through weeks of quiet observation. Notebook, yarn, three colored pencils, and fistfuls of smooth pebbles rattled inside, each item waiting for another small task. Sunlight fell in slender bars through the birch branches, making the retreating ice sheet flash silver then fade to muted pewter. A cool breath rose from the water, yet warmed cheeks hinted at the season tilting toward growth.
He crouched where yesterday’s snow had shrunk to damp soil, spilled the stones onto the granite bank, and pressed each one against the shining melt line. In quick succession he added scraps of yarn between the stones, a pencil here, a twig there, until bright markers crowded the fragile frontier. Water lay calm beyond the crystalline rim, yet the surface burbled under the ice as air pockets escaped. Wyatt tried to fathom the pattern of cracks marching inward, but the confusion of colors he had scattered disguised the very thing he hoped to trace. A faint crack, soft as splitting celery, travelled across the ice and stopped beneath his boots.
Breath held mid-placement, he froze, fingers hovering above a final green pencil on the shore. The sun slipped behind a cloud, and every improvised beacon dulled at once, a sudden revelation carried on dull silver light. He swept the yarn away first, then the pencils, stacking them back into the tote, mud streaking the cloth like careless brushwork. Only a single flat pebble remained against the ice, its wet surface throwing a neat coin of reflected sky. Water leaked over the ice skin in thin sheets, pooling around the pebble and darkening the mud to glossy amber.
Farrah, waiting a few steps upslope, watched the clearing of clutter and said, “Neater,” her voice a low thread that neither hurried nor praised. Wyatt nodded once, set the tote on the bank, and tapped the lone stone with a fingertip, memorising the edge without words. A dragonfly larva case clung to the exposed reed, its empty shell brittle under the returning sun. The cloud drifted, a beam returned, and the pond answered with a single bright shimmer that slid over the pebble and vanished. Mud had soaked halfway up the tote’s corner, the faded fabric stiffening as it dried in shadow.
