English 原文
A composing stick balanced on its narrow edge instead of resting flat across the wooden case. A blur of brown feathers touched down, claws settling— a sparrow no larger than a thumbprint. It cocked its head at the rows of reversed letters, lamp light glinting along the tiny shadows each serif cast. Cold iron smelled faintly of oil, the scent mixing with cotton-rag paper stacked beneath the case. Outside, a cart rolled over cobblestones, causing a light vibration that made the loose type whisper against its wooden compartments. The stick trembled, the bird fluttered once, then settled, turning the odd orientation into an easy perch. Nina stood motionless beside the type case, fingers hovering above the cool metal sorts.
She eased the stick flat again and the sparrow flew to a ceiling beam streaked with ink dust. Letters clinked into the channel as her thumb pushed them, every piece sharp edged and shining like new coins. The reversed shapes still fooled her sight; a stubborn p kept appearing where a q belonged. Kieran glanced over from the inking slab and muttered, “It fought you once more?” Nina locked the line, inked the forme, and pulled the lever until the platen kissed the waiting paper. When she lifted the sheet, one word sat fractured, the rogue letter breaking the tapestry of even strokes. She stacked the misprint aside, palm sliding over the roller handle where a fine fracture marred the varnish.
Her shoulders loosened and the composing stick stayed on the bench while she fetched the broom. Bristles rasped across ink-stained boards, sweeping curled paper trimmings into a shallow drift. The sparrow swooped down, seized a strip, bounced once, and slipped through a crevice between two bricks. It repeated the theft, vanishing and returning, until Nina paused with the broom still pressed against her hip. Inside the gap she noticed a layered lining appearing, each scrap turned underside out as if the bird understood mirror logic better than she did. A cart rattled past outside, shaking dry type in their drawers while Nina hung the broom on its hook.
She dragged a squat marble block—a personal stepping stone— closer to the press and stood on it for a clearer view. The nest material caught lamp light, threads gleaming across brick like patches on a faded cloak. The sparrow flitted out through the door and silence settled except for the low tick of cooling metal. Nina reset the stubborn letter, double-checked its orientation, then rolled a thin film of ink across the forme. The platen pressed, paper lifted, and this time the word lay straight, unbroken, quietly echoing the nest’s new symmetry. Fresh linseed ink hovered in the warm air while Nina pegged the sheet beside the waiting sparrow.
