The Clicking Horse Behind the White Screen-

English 原文
The lamp’s filament glowed dull orange, a shade that arrived only after two hours of steady heat. Beneath that patient light, Nora eased a leather horse toward the taut cotton screen and heard a dry click—the creature’s tail flicked whenever a hidden pin inside its flank tapped the bamboo rod. She widened her eyes, brought the puppet closer, and the shadow shrank while the click quickened, a tiny mechanism spelling rhythm into darkness.
Beyond the screen the audience saw only silhouettes, yet on this side the leather joints warmed, softened, and whispered. A plume-shaped cloud of dust drifted from the rack each time a figure was lifted, and the shadow on the cotton rippled as though it breathed. The narrative that unfurled out front looked seamless, but backstage Nora traced the gaps where hinges showed their age: some smelled green, still new-cut; others, seasoned by countless rehearsals, carried mellow warmth. She whispered toward the lamp, “Too sharp,” then edged the horse back a finger’s width so its outline blurred and joined the wider scene in cohesive motion.
A prolonged creak from the upper shelf stalled her hand. The horse rod caught against a hook that sat just above her reach, a soft constraint that slowed the flow of figures. Nora paused, rolled her shoulders, and considered leaving the horse aside; instead, she crouched, found an unused bamboo extender, and pressed it into the rod’s base. The added length conveyed the horse higher, freeing it from the hook, and another click rang—clearer this time. A plethora of tiny holes along the extender let air slip through, dulling vibration so the click settled into a steadier beat. In that beat she sensed the collective memory of the troupe resting in every softened hinge, each tap recalling evenings when older hands worked these same rods, though no words named the thought.
She now understood the first surprise differently: the click was not a flaw but the gallop itself, timed by distance and heat. Tilting the extender, she let the horse circle wide; its shadow swelled enormous, edges feathered, click deepening like hooves on damp soil. The crowd gasped on the other side, the sound faint yet unmistakable. She drew breath, then let the horse complete one last lap before easing it down. The cotton glove on her right hand, new at morning rehearsal, now bore a stripe of lamp-darkened grease. Nora slid the clicking horse onto the rack.
