English 原文
The disc rested in the clipped grass, its flattened dome reflecting noon light as though the polymer were rigid as a tin lid. Merritt pinched the rim and braced for that hardness, yet his fingers sank; the material yielded, then sprang back, nudging his balance a fraction rearward. A faint sting lingered in his thumb while he lifted the flexible saucer, weighing breeze direction with a tilt of shoulders and chin. The immense sky above the field felt level, but the disc’s hum would soon reveal every hidden swirl.
He snapped a forearm release toward Faye, thirty paces away, sensing the spin write a bright note that the wind immediately bent into a slow curve. Halfway across, the hum dimmed, stability began to deteriorate, and the saucer sagged, wobbling down beside her ankles. Faye tapped the rim with a knuckle, glanced up, and shrugged one eyebrow. Merritt rolled weight from heel to toe, considered another attempt, then paused; his wrist still remembered the unexpected softness from the first grip.
He walked to the sideline and drew a scrap paper from his pocket, meaning only to check the time printed on its back. The page, already creased, folded under his palm; instinctively, he crumpled it once, feeling how pressure and release could set a curve that held until a touch flattened it. Traffic murmured beyond a distant bustling avenue, its rhythm matching the squeeze-and-open motion working through his fingers. He straightened, shoulders settling, and his hand repeated the gentle bend without the paper, as though rehearsing a quieter throw.
Returning to the center line, he flexed the disc’s rim between both hands, giving it the same shallow arc the paper had kept. Faye waited, knees loose, eyes on the angle of Merritt’s elbow. “Ready when it is,” she said, voice low enough to let the grass still hear birdsong. Merritt planted feet apart, leaned into the light headwind, and released — less snap, more unfolding push. The disc crossed the distance on a rising path, the built-in curve unbending mid-air and ironing itself flat just before Faye’s catch sent a crisp slap across the field. Merritt’s wrist hovered above the warm rim, poised for another throw.
