Shuttle Pauses on a Snagged Thread-

English 原文
No birds called through the high window when Esme pressed her foot against the loom’s treadle; nothing but the faint wooden sigh answered her certainty that today’s cloth would grow straight and true.
The first pale dawn slipped across the warp, showing each strand like a plumb line. Esme sent the shuttle gliding, felt the combined weight of wood and yarn settle into her palm, and beat the row home. A second pass followed, quicker, almost buoyant. Halfway across, the shuttle slowed without warning. A single wool fibre looped around its nose, a small snag that bent the new weft and dragged the line off-course. Esme lifted the beater again, measured the skewed row with thumb and thumbnail, and a quiet pause gathered in her shoulders.
Footsteps crossed the plank floor; Rafferty arrived carrying two heavy spools that knocked softly together. He set them down, the loom’s slight vibration answering their landing, and watched the curved row. "That bend is stubborn," he said, voice low enough to keep the room’s hush intact. Esme eased the tangled fibre free, yet the gap remained. Rafferty slid a hand under the cloth roll, judging its ballast, then braced the far beam so the tension redistributed with fairness along every warp. The adjustment left his knuckles white, her shuttle steady. Together they rewove the distorted pick, each shared motion light but exact, as if the wooden frame asked for two rhythms at once.
A clock outside struck the quarter; fibre dust drifted, settling over unused tools whose small clutter framed the loom’s deliberate order. Esme returned the shuttle to its starting edge, the earlier haste gone. She guided it across once more, slower, the weight now clear in her wrist, and pressed the beater with a gentler stroke that landed true while Rafferty’s palm still bore the beam’s mass. The cloth accepted the line; the warp hummed, neither certain nor uncertain, only balanced under their combined hold.
