English 原文
Every Saturday, the steel pot sat centered on the front burner, its brushed sides catching the dim kitchen light. Today, a faint gradient of amber stained the metal halfway up, a subtle band Delia had not noticed before. The mark clung like a tide line, neither glossy nor rough, simply settled in place. Steam from the barely warmed water rose in wisps that curved away when she opened the window. The stove ticked once, a steady reminder that the ring remained on low heat. Delia brushed condensation from the cold lid with her thumb and set it aside. The pot waited, lighter than she recalled, as though some hidden ballast had vanished overnight.
She poured in a ladle of tomato puree, listening for the slow change from splash to murmur that signaled thickening. Delia had a quiet knack for reading that shift; the spoon handle transmitted it straight into her palm. Halfway through the first circle, the spoon snagged against the rim where a shallow notch interrupted the wood. The momentary drag slowed her rhythm, and she paused, wrist hovering, to feel the sauce settle under its own weight. "Looks thinner today," Freya said from the doorway, resting a mug against her cheek. Delia answered only with another stir, letting the spoon trace a measured loop that chased small bubbles toward the center.
She lifted the spoon to eye level, cooling syrupy droplets sliding off the bowl more slowly than earlier. The liquid now reached precisely the amber band on the pot, as if that obscure gradient marked a past cook's stopping point. To test the veracity of that hunch, Delia let the flame stay unchanged and waited for the level to dip below the line. Steam thickened, carrying a mellow scent of milk from grazing cattle she had poured earlier to soften the tomatoes. A minute passed; the surface sank just beneath the stain, and the bubbles shifted from eager to steadier, deeper bursts. She tipped a taste onto the spoon’s edge, pressed it against her lower lip, and nodded toward Freya without speaking.
Freya set two clean bowls beside the stove, but Delia paused, palm resting on the lid rather than sealing in the steam. The old stain had shifted from puzzle to gauge; erasing it now felt like scraping away a quiet signature. She raised the pot, angled it just enough, and stopped when the surface dropped a finger below the band. The handle’s weight pressed a faint crescent into her palm, reminding her of mornings spent adjusting gates on the family farm. Her wrists loosened, allowing a single, gleaming ribbon to slip back toward its mark. The pour arced ruby and slow through the warm air, still falling toward the waiting pot.
