Helena paused at the workshop entrance. A damp footprint shimmered on the polished floor, catching a slant of overhead light like a silver leaf pressed flat. She lingered, tracing its outline with her eyes while the room whispered with soft plops from distant trays and the dull clink of combs returned to racks. The footprint aimed toward the paint-mixing station rather than the size trays, and that detail tugged at her curiosity more strongly than the half-finished marbled sheets drying beside the radiator.

She crossed the room and stopped before the row of paint cups. Lime, ultramarine, and burnt sienna formed a quiet gathering of colour, each surface trembling under the lamps. The novelty of a half-full violet cup tempted her, yet today’s small quota of three alum-washed sheets waited beside the basin, so she chose familiar hues first. A clean stick lifted a drop of ultramarine; it fell, spread wide, and pressed earlier circles inward. The expanding rings resembled floating ornament, bright but fragile, and her fingers tightened on the stick when two colours collided and blurred near the meniscus.

The pattern looked crowded. She hesitated, then scooped away the muddied edge with a strip of newspaper, breathing steadily as the surface cleared. Perception shifted when she remembered the footprint’s direction; toe marks pointed away from the trays, hinting at a reversal she had not considered. Without comment she twisted the stick in the opposite direction from her usual spiral, letting the swirl tighten the other way. The water mirrored every motion, yet nothing spoke except the amber glare sliding across the liquid as the overhead fixture flickered.

Her first sheet met the surface in one smooth roll. Colours hushed beneath the paper, and after a slow count she lifted the print. The spiral now read correctly on the sheet, not reversed as on previous attempts, and the damp footprint from earlier seemed to explain itself at last. She laid the print aside, reached for a fresh alum-treated page, and lined its edge above the tray. Amber glare glowed across the wet design while Helena eased the second print onto the drying rack.
