English 原文
Katia paused on the wooden boardwalk, watching a chain of tiny footprints dotted across the damp, white travertine lip of the spring. The marks curved toward a plume of steam that rose from the center, each dot crisp despite the warm drizzle of condensation. A muffled plop announced a gas bubble breaking beneath the surface, then silence folded back over the pool until the next irregular murmur. Down in the mineral-rich water, rust-orange streaks drifted like ribbons, their colors shifting with the temporal rhythm of the convection. The footprints drew her gaze more than the colors; nothing else disturbed that ledge, yet the tracks ended abruptly beside a dark volcanic boulder half-embedded in the terrace.
She leaned over the rail, stretching one arm toward the ledge; the boardwalk answered with a warning groan and kept her back. Warm vapor fogged her glasses, and the distance remained just wide enough to leave her fingertips dry. She straightened, rubbed the lenses on her sleeve, and shifted her weight, searching for a closer stance. A wagtail fluttered in, settled on the rim, then skipped away, leaving fresh dots that overlapped the older line. The bird’s rhythm broke her focus; she stepped back, letting the mystery wait, and walked after Tobias, who had begun lifting flat pumice disks from a shallow basket wedged between the benches.
Tobias flicked a disk across the overflow channel; it skimmed twice, tapped the opposite travertine, and sank with a muted thunk. “Here,” he said, offering a rounder disk. Katia knelt to sort the remaining pieces by thickness, their edges rasping together like distant cicadas. While her hands moved in that simple cascade of sorting, a thought surfaced alongside the clatter: every second disk carried a thin crescent of rust, echoing the orange ribbons inside the pool. She stopped mid-motion, holding one disk still. The curved stain matched the print on the ledge—wider on one side, tapering on the other. The wagtail chirped overhead, yet this mark lay nowhere near a bird’s reach.
She set the disk on the rail, fingers lifting away as though loosening a lid. Silence settled into the gap her movement left. Water lapped more softly here, so she crouched beside the ledge and watched the damp arc darken, then fade. The earlier trace rearranged itself: not a bird’s route, but a scatter of mineral droplets that cooled in midair, pinning a temporary signature onto stone. Katia kept her palms resting open on her knees, breath steady, body still. Below, the pool murmured its endless cascade while a fresh plume bent sideways on the wind.
