English 原文
Beckett stepped across the weather-stained sill into the narrow foyer, half inside, half tasting the courtyard’s rain on his lip, when a sparrow burst from behind the kettle and skidded across the low table. Its claws rattled the wooden tray, and the first pour trembled; steam carried a metallic tang that met his tongue before the sip reached it.
He kept adding—another cup beside the first, a second handful of rolled leaves, a third quick rinse that turned the clay teapot darker—until the table became an aggregate of small circles, each reflecting different shades of gold. Water drummed inside the kettle; the lid quivered like a coin on edge. “Plenty of room,” he said, though his own perception narrowed to the bird hopping between cups, beak tapping rims for stray drops. A disheartened band of mud clung to its tail feathers, dull next to the bright liquor cooling in shallow bowls.
The bird fluttered, struck a cup, and leaves scattered over lacquer. Beckett reached to steady the mess, paused, then slid half the cups back into their rack. Space opened; the steam column thinned. He lifted one cup, poured slowly, and set it alone at the table’s center. With clutter stripped away, comprehension arrived in a quieter register— the sparrow wasn’t trapped at all; it pecked the softened leaves, gathering them like twine before flying upward toward the rafters where reed ends already poked from a narrow beam. He watched the creature balance, drop the damp leaf coil into its forming nest, and dive again toward the single waiting cup.
Beckett stepped aside, letting the door stand ajar behind him. The emptied rack leaned against the wall; a single cup rested warm, faint ripples crossing its surface. Leaves floated inside, opening further in the lingering heat.
