English 原文
Wyatt’s wrist tilted the kiln’s peephole cover open before his thoughts caught up with the motion. Just beside the glowing slit rested a chalk-pale cup, its lip still powdery, the shape turning gently on a narrow wooden bat. His first encounter with that cup had been hurried, one of many pieces loaded before dawn. Now, the faint orange breathing behind the slit painted the cup’s curve, and a line of warm air pressed against his knuckles. Ash specks clung to the bat like gray freckles on weathered skin, recalling years of firings that had thinned its grain.
Hours earlier, on the cool workbench, Ursula had trimmed that same cup, her loop tool whispering in steady rings. Each stroke thinned the base until light slipped through a hidden hollow she had coaxed beneath the floor. The cavity, no wider than a coin, formed a quiet reservoir where glaze could pool later, deepening colour after firing. “The wall listens for breath,” Ursula murmured, her fingertips checking the new footring carefully. Between tasks she paused, an interlude filled only by distant birds and the soft creak of drying shelves. A quick nod sent Wyatt to stack wood, while the cup rested inverted, delicate footmarks already gathering fine dust.
Back by the kiln, a muted thump came from the firebox, and a brief geyser of sparks threaded upward through the flue. Wyatt stepped back, ash puffing around his boots as a second ember coughed from the opening. A hotter line of air traced his shins, and the shelf stood slightly too near, yet the bat refused to slide over the gritty floor. He pinched the bat’s edge, rotated the cup a finger’s width, and froze when a faint clink echoed inside the vessel. The quick metallic sound suggested something loose within the clay, though he remembered removing every trimming. A breath of cooler air crossed his neck; still, the brick apron at his knees radiated steady warmth, trapping his indecision in place.
Wyatt remembered Ursula tapping another form to settle slip inside a recess; perhaps the clink belonged to that unseen hollow. With thumb and middle finger, he lifted the cup, rolled it until the hidden cavity faced upward, and the sound ceased as particles slid away. The rotation moved its blushing side toward the cooler bricks, removing it from the strongest draft but accepting less flame-kissed colour. He left it there, choosing the quiet of a preserved shape over the dance of deeper hues. When he slid the paddle back onto the rack, a ridge of bark along its handle had blackened and flaked away.
