When the Shutter Matched the Mill Wheel -

English 原文
Lana stepped across the low threshold, loose flour puffing around her boots, and the dim room widened with every pace. A wooden rod under the ceiling knocked once, then again; each knock set a latch in motion, and a narrow shutter beside the wheel slid open just wide enough for sunlight to stripe the stone floor. Through that stripe the overshot wheel turned, buckets filling, descending, emptying—water surfacing in quick flashes before vanishing beneath the paddles. Near the wall, a carving of a bear cub clung to a joist as if hitching a ride on sound alone, its tiny paws forever braced against the grain.
Warren stood by the hopper, palm under the steady pour of kernels, letting them drum against his skin before dropping them into the gap. The wheel’s slow thump circled in one tempo, the grain’s restless hiss in another, and the mill became a quiet melting pot of rhythms, smells, and drifting dust. He raised an eyebrow toward Lana but said nothing; her gaze stayed on the rod that kept flicking the shutter. She had learned the mill’s noises as background years ago, something easy to take for granted, yet today the rod looked freshly polished where the latch met it, as though someone had adjusted its reach during last night’s rain.
A dry creak rode the next rotation—a faint harbinger that the runner stone pressed too close. Lana’s fingers, halfway to the lever, paused mid-air; the wheel and the grain suddenly landed on the same beat, the shutter’s slide clicking exactly as a new rush of kernels entered the stones. Her breath synced to that joint pulse before thought offered comment. She nudged the lever a quarter turn, waited, and felt the floorboards relax beneath her soles when the creak softened. The rod no longer knocked; instead, it hovered, balanced between motion and rest, and the shutter stayed half open, holding the bar of light like a ruler across the flour pile.
She walked back toward the threshold, small clots of damp dust rolling under her steps. The door she had crossed minutes earlier now wore a fresh streak of white where her shoulder had brushed it on entry, a narrow band already settling into the oak’s darker grain. Her hand found the same iron latch, still warm from sun pooling outside, and she tilted it to listen for the wheel’s new rhythm through the timber.
