English 原文
A blue LED above the stairwell door flickered and threw a narrow rectangle across the gravel roof. Rhea stepped through the glow. The metal watering can bumped her knee as she moved toward the row of clay pots. Each marigold stood stiff, its orange crown folding after the strong sun. Vivian paused at the doorway and watched. "The roof sounds calmer than the hallway," she said, then let the door swing shut behind her. Dusty heat rose from the tarred surface, and the scent of dry clay floated over it. The loose lid on an air duct offered a mild rattle, and the low hum of hidden machines answered it. The two noises wove into Rhea's daily rhythm. Far beyond the railing, the silhouette of a water tank cut the sky. A ship horn below threw a short signal between walls.
Rhea tilted the can, and water drummed into the first pot in a steady beat. Mid-pour, a deeper vibration crawled up through the concrete. The tremor came from the busy roadside below where heavy trucks rolled past the building. The sound reached the hanging glass chimes she had tied to the railing last spring. Each tube trembled. Their bright ring slid into a dull muffle, the pitch dropping until it echoed inside her chest. The noise carried a rough recollection of distant thunder trapped in metal. She pressed one finger against the largest tube. Contact slowed the wild resonance, yet something still rattled. She tipped the hollow glass. A pale feather slipped out and floated away. Instantly the clear ring returned, thinner and quicker than before.
She placed the half-empty can beside the stairwell wall and wiped damp grit from her palm. A hair-line crack along the glass tube caught the last light, marking how the roof had shaken. The restored ringing drifted toward the antennas and mixed with the steady hum below. Rhea opened the door and walked inside.
A brown beetle clattered onto the warm gravel. It traced a slow path under the nearest pot and disappeared.
