English 原文
Cardamom and roasted chickpeas scented the narrow lane, hanging above bright cloth roofs.
Xavier stood behind a low table and let rice trickle from a tin scoop. Fenna kept pace beside him, guiding each fresh mound of salt into waiting cotton bags. The routine flowed, queues bent, coins rang, grain paths formed again across the worn boards. A thin film of flour dust drifted whenever she straightened a sack, dotting their sleeves. Leadership along the stall changed every minute, yet the pair simply served the next palm.
By midday, sand under the table's front leg sifted away with every shuffle from the crowd. Xavier noticed the change through the scoop handle; its weight slid sideways, asking for a tighter grip. Lentils rolled toward one corner, and a slow avalanche of yellow grains brushed his knuckles. He whispered, “The leg is shifting,” and bent to search. A loose stone lay under the pepper barrel, an overlooked resource no heavier than a mango. He wedged it beneath the timber; the benefit showed as the surface levelled and the avalanche stopped. They continued, yet a round glass bead slipped from the settled lentils and caught Fenna’s eye. She laughed, lifted it, and set it between two scales like an accidental ornament. Motivation from the crowd stayed steady; baskets still approached, yet the small bead marked the earlier tilt. Heat pressed through a stripe of afternoon light, and their hands slowed to take a break. Soft chatter wrapped the lane. Canvas awnings flicked shadows across their goods, and a brass bell answered a seller down the row. Fenna tapped the new wedge once more, while Xavier nudged lentils into a ridge that met the stone. The wedge and the bead sat side by side, bright against the calm mound of lentils. Xavier pressed a thumb on the ridge once more, and Fenna rolled the bead until it touched wood.
