English 原文
Warm wood grain pressed under Eli's palm. He leaned against a wooden stand at the Saturday market, watching a shallow skillet. Oil inside the pan was already sizzling, and small corn cakes danced in the heat. A striped cat waited below the counter, tail flicking where sun met shade. The square held a busy community of stalls; canvas awnings overlapped like puzzle pieces. Rising heat met a faint breeze, and the aroma of grilled peppers mingled with the cool scent of sliced melon. A vendor in a green apron finished stacking peaches, then shared a quick embrace with her neighbour before turning back to customers. Coins in a nearby scale clinked together as someone paid for herbs. Eli hugged a canvas bag against his ribs and shifted closer to the griddle, hoping to buy the next batch before the cat tried its luck.
A sudden pop began the cascade. One corn cake flipped out, landed on a plate of iced fruit, and the ice hissed. Steam curled upward, gathered against the plastic canopy, and turned into fat droplets. The canopy bowed; droplets dripped onto a stack of paper trays, soaking the top sheet. The wet sheet peeled away, slid across the counter, and nudged a row of glass jars. The first jar wobbled, touched the next, and the entire row started to tip. Eli pivoted one foot, pinched the corner of a woven mat, and wedged it under the leading jar. The mat absorbed the slide; jars slowed and balanced in a shaky line. Warm vapor still floated near the canopy. Drips formed a thin ring on the dusty stones.
