Steam Slows the Mixer Wheel -

English 原文
Two wide metal tables stood an arm-length apart, and a hand-crank mixer rested between them. Noemi turned the wooden wheel that wrapped dough around a thick hook, each spin steady and known. The small gear inside clicked against its partner, and the clicks joined the low hum of the oven in a gentle symphony. After ten turns she stopped, checked the structure of each soft coil, then cranked again.
Yellow light from the oven mouth touched the silver bowl and sent warm flashes across the flour-dusted wall. Steam drifted upward, found the mixer shaft, and settled as a thin bead of moisture. The wheel began to slip; her palm lost some grip. She noticed before thinking, because the quietness between clicks widened. She wondered why the bowl still spun when her hand already paused. She shifted her stance, pressed both hands, and the wheel caught its rhythm. "Easy there," she whispered, while her shoulders relaxed back toward their normal line.
A minute later the steam thickened, and the wheel slowed again, this time with a faint squeak. She lifted one loaf, meant to shape it, but the bowl twirled on by itself, pushed only by its own weight and the damp shaft. Dough lumps edged toward the rim. She set the loaf down unfinished and reached for a dry cloth to clean the pivot. Before the cloth touched metal, a soft clink rose from the cooling shelf behind her. She turned away from the stubborn mixer, stepped across the gap, and steadied a glass jar whose lid had started to rattle.
