English 原文
"Lift the pot slowly."
Theo slid both palms under the warm clay rim. Pebbles shifted under his shoes, and the heavy pot leaned toward him. A thin trail of soil trickled down the slanted lid of the stairwell hatch. He straightened. A brief glimpse of rooftops stretched to the pale horizon. Birch steadied the lower edge with one hand, yet the pot kept a slow wobble. Old water marks circled its base like a flat oath pressed into the clay years ago. Together they lowered the pot onto a narrow wooden board beside a sealed glass jar. Inside the jar, candlelight offered a quiet glow, although noon sunlight covered most surfaces. The little flame bent each time air rolled over the roof.
Birch slid the board a finger width outward, hoping the pot would sit flat. Instead, the board tipped, and the jar began a slow slide toward the parapet edge. Theo lunged and caught the jar; warm glass vibrated against his knuckles. A fresh gust raised the flame, then snapped it low, leaving only a dull glow. The pot, free of the counterweight, leaned again. It tapped the stairwell hatch with a blunt thud. Dried wax inside the jar cracked when the candle shifted, scattering small flakes onto the roof gravel. High above, warm sunlight met the faint salty smell drifting from distant chimneys. Birch let the pot rest half-tilted and turned toward a sudden flutter beside the water tank. He stepped across the warm tar and lifted a loose feather that twirled past his ankle.
