Steam curled over her fingers as she lifted it from the stove and followed Judson up the narrow, stone stairway of the lighthouse. Frost had silvered the metal rail during the night, and each step felt damp through their boots. At the lamp room, sunlight already nudged through the great lens and rested like a warm coin on the floor. The brass hatch that covered the cleaning channel stayed shut; the cold hinge refused to move.

Judson set the kettle beside the hatch. A rising cloud misted the glass, then rolled across his daughter’s cheek. He pressed the spout closer, letting heat soak the metal. While they waited, he pulled a driftwood slat from his pocket. With a short blade, he began to carve a thin wedge, his handiwork sending pale shavings to the floor. The fresh-cut wood showed a neat valley running along its centre. He smiled at the tiny shape and slid the cheerful yellow mug across the sill for her to hold the shavings. The hinge warmed, clicked, and the hatch swung open, but the movement also loosened an unseen panel behind the lens. Wood scraped, and a hidden compartment slid forward, revealing a row of old glass marbles that glowed like small planets in the slanting light.

Far below, waves slapped against rock, and a dull bell echoed through the salt air. Colette rotated one marble; faint warmth lingered where the sun touched it. Meltwater from the thawed hinge began to slip onto the top stair. Water from the melted frost taps along the iron tread. Each thin stream spreads farther down the spiral.
