English 原文
A bare bulb above the prop table buzzed, its light shivering across the boards behind the curtain. Fine dust floated in the warm air and danced each time Inez breathed near the glow. Her friend Miles stacked wooden masks nearby, and every mask knocked a short rattle from the shelf. Inez reached for a thin metal triangle resting beside felt mallets; the cold bar tingled against her skin. When she struck it with one mallet, a clear ring shot outward. The sound met the brick wall and bounced back as a softer echo.
"Sounds good from here," Miles whispered, lifting a linen curtain hem with both hands. The curtain swallowed his words, leaving only the faint hum of an unseen vent behind them. Inez wanted to test how far the note could travel, yet another question waited first. She carried a small tin plate of tasty cherry biscuits toward the stage entrance. The idea of sharing them kept the plate level in her careful hands. Each step made a loose board creak, and the pitch shift mixed strangely with the lingering echo. She stopped beside a tall stack of painted clay pots near the side wall. A deeper vibration rose under the planks and trembled through her shoes. The thin rise in pitch touched her ear and carried into the empty auditorium.
Inez struck the triangle again; this time the resonance stirred every pottery rim into a soft ring. The overlapping tones climbed together and then faded like tiny bells sliding down a wooden hill. Janet peeked from the dressing-room doorway and laughed, "That little triangle reaches the balcony!" The surprise left everyone still, and the lamplight held steady while the sound settled. Near Inez's elbow, the triangle still swung slowly, its note fading while the bulb kept buzzing overhead. The echo lingered around the pots, and her fingers rested an inch above the cool metal bar.
