English 原文
The bulb above the narrow stair buzzed once, then held a steady glow over the landing. Thea carefully carried the rope drum to its pivot hook on the ceiling timber. Eli waited beside the small wooden wheel fixed under the ceiling beam. Each late afternoon they slowly lowered an apple barrel into the cool cellar. Through the open hatch, a strip of stone patio flashed in daylight. A low wooden fence stood beyond it, holding back the garden earth. Thea set her boots inside a chalk boundary on the packed-earth floor. She caught the rough rope and gave a gentle pull with steady hands. The wheel began to spin, coil after coil sliding through her gloved hand. Cool air brushed their cheeks, carrying the dry scent of packed earth.
Midway down the drop, the rope suddenly stiffened without warning for them. The wheel’s rim jerked, and a dull click ran across each iron cog. A thin hiss of air drifted upward; cellar humidity had swollen the fibers during the night. Eli placed two fingers on the rim to steady the rattling spin. “It turns heavier now,” he said, and shifted his stance rather than stopping the descent. Thea answered by easing her grip, letting the barrel drop a finger-width, then catching the line again. The new rhythm turned slower, yet the drum still spun below smoothly. Wood rubbed against wood, releasing a faint grinding beat that echoed across jars and stone.
The barrel reached the floor and tapped the chalk line, stopping its small orbit. Thea slipped the loop free, and Eli rewound the empty rope, each coil stacking neatly. A smear of dark rope dust remained along the boundary where her boot had shifted. Above, the bulb kept its pale circle, while the wheel hung still. Dust motes revolved inside the light, slowed, and then came to rest in the quiet air.
