English 原文
The filament bulb above the cellar stairs buzzed once and shivered, throwing narrow bands of light across the stone treads. Greer carried a short broom in one hand and tapped the rail with the other while she descended, a motion her body knew well. Ines the cat waited below, tail curled close to the rough floor where small holes between bricks served as quiet dwellings for beetles. A shelf of glass jars pressed against the back wall; their lids showed tiny rings where fingers had turned them so often that the metal began to polish smooth.
Greer started her routine sweep. The broom bristles caught grit, then scraped over the uneven flagstones with a dry whisper. Each pull offered gentle drag, yet the handle stayed light in her grip. Near the shelf stood a tin of old coins; traders said the discs might grow in value, but Greer liked the sharp clink they made. A carved wooden knob, once fixed to the front door and still a point of family pride, rolled slightly when the broom nudged it. "Still firm," Greer said, touching the nearest jar to check its seal. Cold glass met her palm, and dust rubbed away under her thumb.
A soft grind answered from below. One wooden wedge that gave support to the shelf had worn thinner over winter; the board tilted by a breath. The jar’s base began to slide across the smoother patch of wood, its rim issuing a faint squeak. Greer shifted her weight and pressed two fingers against the jar, slowing its movement, yet tiny grains kept trickling from the wedge. Ines crouched, ears forward, as the board leaned another millimeter; the glass continued to inch toward the edge.
