English 原文
A bright thread of honey crossed the wooden table—who left the cap cell open?
Dinah bent closer and saw the frame of honeycomb resting at a gentle tilt. Glynis held a knife warmed by a pan of water, its blade sliding under wax lids. Thin curls of pale wax dropped, piling beside a postcard that showed a distant tundra under violet sky. A desk lamp buzzed; quiet electricity warmed a soft pad hidden below the wooden tray. That heat loosened the thick honey, so another stripe rolled away from the comb’s edge.
Near Dinah’s elbow, a metal spoon rested in a shallow bowl filled earlier with cool water. Drops of condensation formed along the spoon’s neck, each bead shining under the bright light. The bowl sat entirely apart from the honey work, its surface humming with its own slow cooling. For two long minutes, honey slid, and water chilled; both movements ignored each other. Sweet scent rose into warm air, while faint metallic chill touched Dinah’s knuckles when she steadied the bowl. Her perception of weight shifted; the bowl now felt heavier, though nothing visible had entered the water.
The next honey ribbon stretched too far and broke, falling straight onto the cold spoon. Warm syrup spread across the silver, met the chilled beads, and stiffened into a cloudy skin. Water shivered, sending a pale ring outward; at the same moment, honey inside the frame slowed. Heat now reached two fronts, and the small accident tied them without any plan from either pair of hands. Glynis glanced over; "It found its own lid," she said. Dinah lifted the spoon, and the chilled skin cracked to uncover a glossy amber mirror. She slid the spoon into a waiting jar, sealed its mouth, and set it beside the postcard. Dinah wiped the small sticky path with a damp cloth.
