She rapped the side of the humble wooden apple-sorter, and the round gear shuddered but refused to turn. A warbler hopped along a branch overhead, its toes gripping while its head pivoted with quick twitches. Wanda lifted one smooth pear, set it on a stump, and gave it a gentle spin. The fruit twirled across the flat surface, whispered once against the bark, then slowed when the rough ring caught its skin.

She tried a second pear from a different basket. This one felt cooler, and its heavier weight gave the spin more steadiness. The pear rolled farther, tapped the sorter’s wooden rail, and rocked back, leaving a thin line of juice. Sunlight flashed across the glossy rind, and a dry rustle of leaves drifted through warm air. Niles knelt beside the sorter and poured a small portion of water over the axle. "Maybe it only wants a drink," he joked, wiping his thoughtful groove of a thumb along the rim. Wanda laughed and nudged the handle; the gear clicked once, then stalled. A third pear followed, smaller and lighter, and its quick whirl skidded sideways, bumping the warbler’s fallen feather so it spiraled toward the grass.

Together the partners crouched lower, fingers tracing the damp edge where the wheel met the frame. Wanda pushed, skin tightening across her knuckles. She gave the wheel one more tug. It shivered in place, still stuck.
