English 原文
From the loading door, Ada watched a small snipe land on the mossed edge of the millrace.
It stood thin as a reed, bobbed once, then slipped its long bill into the shallow water.
Inside, the overshot wheel lifted and spilled, and the millstones kept their patient rhythm under the floorboards.
Joel’s sleeves were dusted white, his hands near the lever, but his gaze slid toward the bird as well.
The air smelled of wet timber and warm flour, a soft cloud drifting where grain met stone.
Each splash outside sent a brief tremor through the threshold plank where Ada rested her fingers.
A long bar of sunlight lay across the boards, and the wheel’s shadow blinked through it like shutters with every slow quarter-turn.
A flagon of water sat on the sill, beaded with condensation; another flagon waited by the hopper’s brace.
The wall beyond them showed smooth arcs where a plasterer once pressed lime to lath, pale and cool to touch.
“It circles,” Joel said quietly, not moving the lever, as the snipe traced the bank between the wheel’s spilling pulses.
Ada lifted a wooden board from a stack, swept a handful of warm flour onto it, and added barley like small moons.
She pinched a second mound, then another, rubbing grains between thumb and forefinger to hear the faint change in grind.
The board crowded with rings, flecks, and lines until the first shapes blurred under new ones, and dust fogged her knuckles.
A splash louder than the rest shook the sill, and her hand paused mid-sprinkle while the snipe froze and lifted its head.
When the water eased, the bird dipped and probed in quick bursts, matching the wheel’s rhythm instead of the river’s steady pull.
Ada skimmed flour away with the flat of her palm, swept the barley aside, and left a single bright ring near the corner.
She held a pinch to her nose; the fresh warmth still rose from the grind, mellowing as it cooled on the board.
Joel eased back, his coat brushing the beam, and said, “There,” the single word hanging above the ring.
Outside, the snipe traced the same narrow crescent below the spilling lip, head down, then still, as water slackened between pours.
Sun from the open door crept across the floorboard, and the wheel’s flickering shadow reached the ring and began to break its brightness.
Ada held the board steady at the edge of the light, her fingers whitening with the fine dust.
