English 原文
"That scale blinks red."
Cool spray hissed along the lettuce row, and pale vapour drifted over the stainless plate with a peppery-green smell. Fluorescent white light bounced off the wet skin of cucumbers, while a warm, yeasty drift from the bakery crossed the cooler air like sweet fog. Josie rolled the cart forward; the front wheel squeaked and hesitated at a seam, then slid on with a rubbery hush. Garner stood by the apples, their skins giving off a faint cider tang, and lifted one to the basket. Near the scale, a small onion showed a thin pale thread at its crown, like a loose string, and the air around it carried that sharp, clean bite of raw onion. Josie turned the onion in her palm, and the scent intensified, bright and nasal, as mist beads gathered on the bag at her wrist.
They placed the bag on the cold plate, where a tiny relay clicked under the glass and a steady beep rose, almost medicinal. The touch screen pulsed and selected pears by mistake; Garner tapped the back arrow, his finger leaving a short, damp print. From the bakery, the slicer’s guard snapped with a resolute metallic bite, and sweet crust-scent rolled across the aisle. The label printed, but the damp bag shed it at once; the sticker curled like a leaf and lifted. Josie pulled a thin brown towel from the dispenser and wiped the plastic; the towel darkened where it met moisture, and the onion’s tang flared. She counted patiently: one towel, then a second, then a third, each pass drying a longer stripe until the plastic squeaked. Tilting the onion into the light, she found the “thread” was a soft green point; a tiny spike had begun to germinate from the crown. They weighed again. The relay clicked; the screen showed onions; the printer hummed; the warm label pressed flat. The adhesive caught and stayed.
The next morning, a faint onion bite still lingered near the scale, thinner than before and edged with a papery note. Water marks on the metal plate had dried into pale circles, and the trash cup held three crushed brown towels speckled with salt-white traces. Light lay across the produce table, and the mist nozzles rested, their tips beaded but still.
