English 原文
Two pale drip-lines had already crept across the cardboard price sign where Emmet parked the fogged pitcher. Under the umbrella, Tatiana tested the tilt clamp; the lever stuck, and the pole offered slick resistance. A twinge jumped along her wrist as the breeze pressed the canopy and the hinge creaked. She snapped the latch closed, but it slipped a notch, and the shade line slid off the table. Paper cups shivered; one rocked toward the edge until Emmet steadied it with a knuckle. Steel-grey coins flashed when the coin box shifted, releasing a dry metallic tang as its lid wobbled.
Tatiana stepped over to the prep station, where lemon halves wet the cutting board. She twisted the hand-juicer; pulp clogged the ridged dome, and seeds dotted the cloudy pool in the cup. She cleared the dome with a finger, then wiped it on a napkin, leaving a faint citrus sheen. A neighbor, Haida, ambled along the grass edge with a hose trailing, water catching light in brief silver arcs. She lifted the sugar bowl; warmth rose when the lid came off, and grains rustled as she poured. One more spoon went in to appease a quiet request for sweeter sips from the next cup. Dean paused at the serving table and squinted. “Which number is this?” Tatiana brought the sign closer; ink had blurred where earlier drips crossed, the cardboard’s integrity thinning at the streak. She tipped the coin box, and its hinge did its duty, holding the lid steady while coins chimed.
On her way past the umbrella zone with fresh ice, a gust pressed the canopy until the pole creaked. The tilt clamp still sat half-closed from earlier, its teeth barely engaged. Tatiana braced her forearm against the cool pole, lifted a finger’s width to ease the weight, and pinched the lever. The napkin from the juicer wrapped her grip; the latch slid, then clicked and held. Shade edged back across the table, the breeze thinning there, and ice cubes answered with a bright, blue-clear clink. Under that strip of shade, the price sign showed a widening blue smear where the missing digit kept traveling.
