English 原文
Fenna pinched the pipette and lifted a bead of green to the tray before she even looked up.
A swallow landed on the narrow window ledge, a dark triangle against midday glare and the glass's gathered warmth. The tray held still, its cool surface thick enough that the first drop spread slowly across it. Condensation beaded on the ink bottle, and her wrist left a faint damp ring on the bench. Two aprons hung side by side; one stayed folded, its neck strap untwisted, the second stool tucked tight beneath the table. Upton counted an easy quota of five blanks onto the bench and kept one space on the drying rack clear. Small bottles waited between their elbows, and a wooden comb rested beside a thin stylus, both cool to the touch. The swallow held still, head tilting, as Fenna let the bead fall and watched the pale circle widen.
Upton turned the window winch a few notches, and a cooler draft slid across their sleeves, wrinkling the surface with gentle ripples. She began to lay the paper, then paused halfway when the faint waves nudged the circle, her fingers hovering above the water. "It's open now," Upton said, the words soft enough not to stir even the hanging rag. She lowered the sheet from one edge, letting the ripples run ahead of it, and shifted her grip when the corner threatened to crumple. The swallow flicked its tail but kept its place; the glass offered warmth despite the new chill moving through the room. When Fenna lifted the paper, cool weight draped from her hands, and color clung to it in veined lines and small islands. She skimmed the remainder of floating specks with a plain strip, and the tray settled to stillness again.
As she turned to set the wet sheet down, a raised corner brushed a tiny scrap from the bench. The swallow darted, caught the light curl, and vanished into the glare with a brief flick of wings. Fenna leaned toward the window, palms flat on cool wood, and her eyes found a half-moon of dust along the beam outside. "Do you see that clean arc on the beam?" Upton asked, his hands quiet over the rack. The pale curve lay against the grime, an outline the draft did not smudge. The swallow returned and pecked one more thread from a crumpled offcut near the tray, then left the room to its cool quiet. Whether a shallow ridge from those early ripples will show along the lower margin will emerge only after drying. Fenna slid the veined sheet onto the rack and tapped one corner to drain a last cool bead.
