English 原文
The branch lay still along the fence, but the gate on its hinge ticked once in the breeze.
Fresh earth lifted a rich, mushroom-like smell from the bed, while wet gravel near the path gave off a sharp mineral scent. Olwen knelt by the hedge, sorting bulbs in a tray that breathed a dry, peat smell. A small radio on the tray puffed out a fast advertisement jingle, thin and sugary in the cool air. Near the tap, a slow trickle darkened stones and left a faint metal taste on the air. A red magnet clung to the tap pipe; when Pierce brushed it, it clicked and slid a finger-width. The round stone in the bed glistened on its darker, wet side, speckled with pale lichen. “It smells like potatoes here,” Elise said, lifting the wooden plank from the path edge. Their goal was simple to see: move the stone toward the planting hole without bruising the sweet stems that released a light, nectar smell when the breeze moved them.
They carried the plank to the flower bed and laid it as a guard between stems and stone. The plank’s damp wood breath sent out a faint resin note. At the fulcrum search area, the gravel breathed that stony tang again as they chose a flat rock and set it near the stone. Pierce slid the branch over it; the bark felt cool and slightly sour with dew. He leaned, and the branch creaked; the stone gave a low, dusty grind that rose like the smell of dry clay. “Hear that scrape?” Elise said, nose wrinkling. The rock suddenly tipped; one side sank as the soft soil compressed, and a whiff of silty, pond-like smell rose. The stone barely moved; the branch end lifted instead. The guard plank had taken precious space, and the lever’s long arm now pressed at a weak angle. Worse, the tap’s creeping thread of water reached the path edge; two smaller rocks rolled a finger-width on the slick gravel and settled with a dull odor of damp dust.
They did not remove the guard; instead, Elise slid it back a hand-width, accepting a light brush of outer leaves that released more green scent. She swapped the fulcrum order: first a flattish rock on the path edge to spread pressure, then a thinner stone closer to the round stone. She laid a ruler across the plank to mark the gap, its cold metal leaving a faint metallic tang on her fingertips. When the stems leaned away on the next breeze, Pierce pressed down in that brief clear window. The branch groaned, the stone grated, and then rolled a short line, leaving behind an earthy, sweet breath from stirred mulch.
The stone now rested with one edge kissing the hole’s clay-streaked lip, and a muddy ring showed where the fulcrum had sunk. The flowers stood with a few bent tips, still giving off that sugar-soft smell. From the back step, the whole lever scene shrank to a brown line nudging a dark round. A single bead of water on the ruler’s edge trembled, bright as salt, then slid.
