English 原文
The wet band on the leaning marker post had slid a hand’s width lower, so the flats had opened more ground.
An oystercatcher trotted past a shallow pool, its red bill catching sun, its black back throwing a clean silhouette against the glossed sand. Delia stood a stride behind, her shadow touching Cole’s boot and shortening as the light climbed. Salt hung in the air, and the pools held the sky so tightly that every cloud line looked stitched to the floor.
Cole knelt, raised a palm to block the glare, and lowered it to the pool’s edge where a narrow thread began to unspool. Water escaped through a sand-cut channel no wider than a pencil, yet the glassy surface seemed unchanged. Another ripple passed from a small footstep far away, and that too vanished without lowering the bright rim of the pool.
The bird paused, then leaned forward, its tail lifted as a counterweight while the long bill probed the soft seam beside the water. Tiny beads of air rose where it touched, a dotted line that broke and healed as the bill moved on. Cole shifted one step closer, felt the boot tread take on slick clay, and stopped with his knee hovering over his own reflection. His hand rose and stayed, then fell to his side; the scene held without his help.
Delia breathed out and spoke softly, words flattening near the water and scuffing the bright skin of the glare. "Still dropping," she said, watching the faint stream slip under the lip and thin itself. Cole glanced at the marker post; the wet shine had shortened, yet the pool’s rim looked unchanged. He set the camera strap to his sleeve, where a cold bead formed, disappeared, and left no darker trace.
Another minute of light slid across the pool; its evolution read like nothing, a flat mirror that kept refusing to change. An extra trickle slipped into the channel, sealed, and vanished; the surface seemed to hold itself in steady breath. Cole lifted the camera, lowered it, lifted it again; his finger paused short of the button, then curled away. The oystercatcher kept to its dotted arc, pecking along the edge, the tail still balancing like a built-in counterweight.
The sand lip slumped, and the pool began to lower fast enough to see.
Water rushed the cut with a hiss at the gravel, and the pool’s mirror turned to wrinkled glass within a few breaths. Ripple after ripple unspooled toward the bird, and the bottom showed pale tracks and a chain of tiny pits. Each pit matched a place the bill had tested, and dotted air rose again, brighter and easier to follow with the glare broken. Delia dipped a shoulder and crouched lower without moving forward, leaving a full stride between her boot and those marks.
Cole traced the bird’s path as it curved along the drained margin, the dotted tests now reading as a ring. He kept his hands quiet and did not intervene; the flats kept their timing, and light shifted across the scene. A new glare spread, lower now, so the bill’s shadow wrote thin lines that even a camera could follow. Cole shifted weight, steadied on the firmer sand, and let his breath out where the reflection would not jump.
Behind them, the wet band on the post shrank another finger’s width, and the distant water sent a low rushing that never stopped. Delia nodded at the bird, then at the small channel scrawled through the sand, and she kept her bootprints clear of it. Light flickered on the drained floor like scales on a fish seen from below, bright but broken and easy to count. Cole’s index finger hovered above the shutter button, the lens held steady on the oystercatcher’s dark shoulder.
