English 原文
The alkaline, tea-salt breath rose from the lifted lid, thinned at the window, and slipped along the tiles.
Poppy stood at the bench she knew by reach, while Greer balanced the clay pot on its low pedestal. The paste carried earth, ash, and a bitter leaf note, cool grit clinging lightly to her fingertip pads. Greer’s knuckles touched the pot’s side; the clay kept a hush of cool beneath the room’s warmer air.
An empty hook above the bench left a pale arc on the wall, a clean shadow where a loop once rubbed. Beyond the doorway, the kitchen sounded wide and cavernous, with only the kettle and knife for company instead of a voice. On the ready shelf, the front row showed a neat gap, an oval of clearer wood inside the usual dust. A faint ring of salt traced the rim where a lid had rested, like low tide on clay. Light fell in a slow gradient across the labels, from white near the pane to honey near the corner.
Greer rested a duck egg on Poppy’s palm, its shell cool, ovals of pale blue ready to vanish under paste. She pressed the grey mixture with two fingers, and the grit checked her speed, so her wrist slowed mid-arc. Light from the window translated through a thin sheen into a dull shine, marking a faint gradient across the paste. Turning the egg against her thumb, she raised concentric ridges no higher than a grain of salt.
“It's steady,” Greer said, watching her wrist pause and settle before the next strip smoothed over the blue. “It smells different today,” Poppy said, nose close to her wrist, as tea and ash met the faint salt. Poppy breathed out through her nose, caught a must of tea and ash, and turned the oval a little more. Her eyes went to the clear oval on the shelf, and her hand left a wider space among the waiting eggs.
She lifted the wrapped oval toward the pot, paused at the rim, and set it back onto the towel for a beat. “Near the front,” Greer said softly, and her free hand tapped the empty hook without looking. When the coat lay even, Greer lowered the egg into the waiting pot, whose clay sides breathed a cooler hush. Poppy reached toward the clean knife by habit and then withdrew her hand to the towel, thumb rubbing the edge. She pressed the cloth on the lid after Greer set it in place, palms flat, careful not to lean on the rim.
Poppy set the towel down and stood still, her hands open over the board’s old stains. The alkaline tang that had risen earlier softened along the window, and the wind chime ticked against its neighbor.
