Five tight turns of the stair rose to the lamp room above the cottage. Padget stopped one step from the glass wall, and Nadine stood at his side. A narrow steel rail circled the room at chest height around the great lens. They carried a small supply of soft cloths and a tin with warm water. Warm metal met their palms, and the room ticked with slow clockwork under glass. Salt spray dried overnight on the outside and left a faint film. They began to wipe in slow circles, keeping their shoulders near the rail.

Nadine produced a small thermos and wet one cloth, then pressed it to brass. Heat moved through the cloth, and Padget drew his hand back for a moment. His breath met the cooler glass and left a pale circle that slowly faded. Another patch formed near his shoulder, so he angled his face toward the door. Sunlight slid across the lens, and one strip of light warmed the low sill. A thin bead of old wax softened there, and a postcard slipped a little. A fleck of cool ash dropped from the chimney cap and marked its corner. "It moved," Padget said, eyes on the small slide across the sill. Nadine nodded once. "The sun reached that spot," she said in a low voice.

They kept working while the warm strip shifted, and parts of the glass lost haze. Padget swapped to a dry cloth and moved slower along the lower edge. The postcard lay half out, its picture warm, its corner still gray with ash. Their small supply in the tin thinned, and the thermos cooled against the rail. "Clear enough for now," Nadine said, her palm flat on the steady metal. A pale oval of fog stayed near Padget’s breath mark and would not fade. He set the warm cloth on the rail, and the postcard lifted its edge.
