Boot Print in Foundry Sand and a Closed Vent -

English 原文
Jude set his boot into the foundry sand, expecting a slide, and his ankle stopped as packed dampness held firm and pressed a crisp print under his tread.
The heel sat inside a darker halo, while the furnace hummed beyond the brick throat and made the air near his shins tremble with wavering warmth.
Frames leaned in stacks, tongs rested on hooks, an iron clamp creaked grudgingly on the bench, and a small fan spilled artificial breeze along the open sill.
A hammer rang near the stone slab, sent a sharp note across the roof, and a sparrow shifted on a beam and whisked into the brighter doorway.
Jude crouched and pressed two fingers beside the heel ridge, then pinched a pinch to feel the grains cohere before he brushed the surface flat again.
Merritt stepped past the cooler bricks, lifted a wooden frame, and set it on the sand floor where the hum lowered and the light turned steadier.
“Here,” Merritt said, sliding a narrow rod across the edge; the gate path traced its curve through the packed bed.
Jude added a vent with the rod, then another, then a smaller one near the corner, his focus narrowed to lines and holes more than the shape itself.
A corner flaked when the rod kissed its edge, and the fragility showed as a thin bridge crumbled and left a feathered burr that wouldn’t brush clean.
Jude paused with the rod half-raised, shoulders tight, while the furnace hummed on and a small silence opened between the last two hammer strikes.
Merritt’s knuckle tapped the wooden frame and made a dry tock, then another, and Jude shifted his weight and kept the rod still.
He set the rod down, lifted the frame a finger’s width, and tilted it toward his boot print to compare the crisp ridge with the furry vent mouth.
Grains shed from the extra hole and pattered onto the heel’s edge, so he pressed a pinch of sand back and closed that vent with two steady swipes.
He left the main gate, left one vent near the far corner, and brushed away the rest until the pattern lay simpler and the channels read clear.
“Good shape,” Merritt said, voice low, and the fan rattled its guard while the brick nearest the charging door held its warm breath.
When the crucible came out in tongs, Jude stepped back to the cooler sand, and the bright pour bent in a thick stream and hissed at the sprue.
Skin formed quick across the top and darkened by degrees, and their focus tightened on the stillness there while a faint ring answered a knuckle tap.
Nothing inside spoke yet, only the furnace hum and the quiet scrape of a brush, and sawdust shifted as the artificial breeze moved through the open gap.
Jude lowered the frame to the floor again by the boot print, noticed a scatter of new grains on its rim, and pressed two fingers into the sand.
