English 原文
Zara had circled the grey shale spiral all morning, the soft brush tracking each rib.
Beside her, Waverly balanced on her heels over the next grid square, shoulders steady as the bristles hushed across stone.
She leaned in, weight sliding toward her left palm planted near a narrow band the sun warmed differently from the cooler layer below.
A light tap from the dental pick gave a flat, certain note over matrix and a thinner ring atop the fossil’s denser arc.
She tried to read the spiral’s diameter by span, fingertip to knuckle, yet the curve kept slipping under a nebulous veil of dust that resettled.
Her wrist adjusted its angle, then reset; the brush traced three strokes, stopped, and hovered midway as her balance quivered on the balls of her feet.
“Here,” Waverly said, not moving from her square, and the sound hung between their bent backs like a held breath.
Zara pressed her palm flat across two color bands, and temperature shifted under her bones, cooler at the lower stripe, warmer where the sun had lingered.
She angled the pick again and listened, then set it down, the small resistance turning ordinary, like a knot that refused to sit flush.
She lifted her hips, straightened her spine, and let the brush rest, bristles up, beside a handle a lathe had cut and long use had softened.
She stepped back from the square, toes testing the slope, and walked two paces to stretch her calves against the low rock ledge.
Grit swung past on the breeze and thudded lightly into empty trays, then stopped; nothing followed.
A small succulent clung to a seam near her knee, its rosette tight and luminous against the banded stone.
She crouched and steadied herself, one hand on her thigh, and noticed faint scuffs where boots had brushed this spot during earlier passes.
Her thumb hovered over a leaf but did not touch, and her weight settled back toward her heels as breath evened.
The succulent’s whorls held their spacing, widest at the rim and tightening inward, and her shoulders found the same small curl they used at the fossil’s edge.
She rose, knees aligning under hips, and returned, not to chip or test, but to hold her posture as before and let her wrist carry that curl.
Under the brush, old scratches ran crosswise on the fossil’s ridge, a shallow, fateful scatter that broke and rejoined the ribs like thin pale seams.
Where the groove in the handle met her fingers, the once-crisp lathe rings had worn almost round, and the tool sat differently against her hand’s natural arc.
She kept still, counted the ribs inside a palm’s span, and two knuckles now held the spiral’s diameter as dust lifted and settled again.

“Under her thumb, the handle’s lathe-cut rings felt almost round, their once-crisp ridges muted by long service.”

“That fateful scatter of pale scratches crossed the ridge, splitting, then knitting, like a quiet verdict etched in stone.”
- succulent
“A tight rosette succulent held the seam by her knee, luminous and patient against the fossil’s banded ledge.”
- diameter
“Two knuckles quietly fixed the fossil’s diameter as the settling dust finally released the spiral’s cool center.”
