English 原文
A brown wren dropped onto the beam above the kiln, head ticking side to side. Heat pressed the skin of Nora’s cheeks before she took another step toward the radiant wall. She counted three slow breaths, the way the paddock had taught her beside a skittery pony. Hugo stood at the firebox with an insulated glove, the peephole cover ready against his palm. Dry air hovered in the shed’s mouth, and the wren bobbed once, then peered down at them.
During a lull, Nora lifted a small, unfired bowl from the staging plank and measured its weight in her hands. Mineral heft settled into her palms without the drag of water, chalk-cool and dense for its size. Her right hand kept a gentle clutch on the rim while her left read the base’s firmness. The clay smelled clean and raw, not yet mellowed by any long heat or glaze.
Hugo tipped the cover aside, and a square of interior glow showed a transcendent orange she could not name. The cone beside the peephole leaned a fraction, its pale tip softening the way wax bows near a candle. Nora rose on her toes for the view, then rocked back when the breath of heat met her eyelids. “See the tip?” Hugo said, his voice low in the kiln room’s even dryness. “A little bend,” she said, and the wren answered with a scratch of toes along the beam.
She lifted a hand toward the bird and stopped halfway, fingers suspended like a pause between two beats. The wren hopped down to a lower brace and pecked at specks hanging above the warm bricks. A ribbon of tiny gnats hovered there, held in the dry climb of air that rose past the wall. The bird stitched a short path through them, throat flicking as each small catch vanished behind its bill.
Nora started her paddock count again, three in, three out, and the wren’s quick rhythm broke it apart. She let the counts go and crouched instead, forearms on her knees, letting the kiln’s schedule take its own pace. Hugo eased the cover shut, then checked the resting cone, whose angle waited for the next reading.
He nodded toward the staging plank, where a fired saucer sat among test tiles and a coil of twine. “Here,” he said, and slid the saucer across the cool end of the plank with two fingers. Nora carried it to the water pail at the shed’s edge and tipped a thin pool into the dish. She set the saucer well outside the radiant reach, and the wren watched with one bright bead of an eye.
From within the sealed chamber, heat worked without hurry, while outside the dry air kept its steady hush. The cone would lean again later, and the unfired bowl would keep cooling on her palms between checks. Nora lowered the bowl, looked once at the beam, and set the saucer of water on the cool plank near the wren.
