English 원문
Rainwater streaked along the cobblestones, pooling beside stacked crates of oranges. Wooden sheets of timber framed a narrow stall near the quay, its striped awning still dripping. Beneath it, a row of objects glimmered: a dull copper kettle, a set of crystal beads, and a square box wrapped in varnished oak. A tin plaque on the counter displayed two simple printed words—“Benevolent Fund.” The stall keeper, sleeves rolled high, slid the plaque aside and pointed at the box with a nod.
The lid showed delicate grooves, yet no hinge appeared. Mara pressed a fingertip along each edge, then lifted; the seam refused to move. While her palm rested on the stubborn surface, a theatre flyer tumbled from the awning and skidded across the counter. Violet ink on the damp paper spelled the title “The Sorrowful Swan.” She set the flyer under a mug to keep it from blowing away, then returned to the box. Twisting her wrist, she tried again. This time a faint creak slipped from the join, but the lid halted halfway, snagged by a hidden latch.
She searched the outer panels, found a shallow notch, and slipped the edge of a folded postcard into it. A brisk snap followed, and the lid eased back, revealing a mirrored interior. Tiny wooden dancers stood inside, arranged around a clockwork tower made of interlocked crystal rods. Light from the quay touched the rods, scattering bright shards across the copper kettle and the theatre flyer. The stall keeper wound a key beneath the mechanism; gears clicked, and the dancers began a slow circle. One figure lost balance, tipped, and caught against the tower. Mara steadied the piece with the postcard, and the circle resumed, each footstep tapping against the mirror.
When the final note faded, shoppers drifted past, unaware of the miniature performance that had finished moments earlier. Mara lowered the lid, felt the latch settle, and placed the postcard between the timber box and the flyer so the two would not shift again. Sunlight slid through the broken clouds and rested on the still box, the flyer, and the quiet kettle.
