English 원문
Lila adjusted the slim strap of her headlamp while a pale stripe of light brushed the distant savanna. She had promised the wildlife center a firm anchor for their new camera, and the abandoned quarry held rocks strong enough to survive a storm. The torch beam bounced across cracked steps as she descended. Loose gravel slid under her boots, and she steadied herself with one palm on the rough wall. The headlamp flickered, then dimmed; she had already replaced its battery once the night before. She tapped the casing, and the glow returned, but weaker. If she had packed a second spare, she would have hurried without hesitation. Instead, she slowed, letting rising dawn brighten the path that weather had carved through sandstone.
Orange light reached the quarry floor when she spotted a block of genuine quartz half buried in dust. A push with her boot freed it, yet the stone rolled farther than expected and bumped a larger slab. The echo startled a resting tortoise that had been hidden beneath the slab’s edge. Its shell rocked as it withdrew every leg. Lila’s shoulders tightened; her intuition warned that removing the cover would leave the animal exposed to daytime predators crossing from the savanna. She tried levering the quartz again, but the tortoise slid with it. She then shifted tactics, scouting the opposite wall where rain had been funnelled through a crack. There, smaller fragments lay scattered, already detached from the cliff. One fist-sized piece matched the center’s requirements. She wrapped it in a cloth, clipped it to her pack, and climbed. Sunlight now filled the quarry mouth, and warm air rose in slow waves. At the rim, she paused once more; morning light pooled across the quiet waterhole.
