The fortitude of the arch revealed itself in unmoved stones even as two loaded handcarts clattered over the planks beside her. Water below slapped rhythmically, hiding an occasional glint of trout. Progress slowed almost at once. A boy lifted a wicker crate, and a speckled chicken burst through a loose hinge, wings hammering the mild air. The bird zigzagged toward Elle; feathers brushed her knees, startling her step. Her satchel slipped, and parchment sheets fanned across the trampled grass. She crouched to gather them, but the crowd folded and pressed, boots grazing the scattered pages. Fingers met the corner of one sheet; the paper bent and held fast beneath a muddy heel. On the second tug the heel lifted; the sheet slid free, leaving only a smudge. Nearby, strangers paused, forming a rough ring that interrupted the crowd’s stream. Without word or instruction, several pairs of hands reached down; a momentary kinship showed in shared stooping and quick nods, and the last fluttering page returned to Elle’s stack.

The escaped hen, now calmer, perched against a crate that someone tilted like a ramp. Its owner eased forward, tucking the bird under an elbow with practiced grace. Space widened again, and movement carried Elle toward the open meadow where canvas roofs thinned. Grass stretched pale and flattened from earlier footsteps, but a clear line to the blue banners finally existed. She checked the sheets—none missing, ink still sharp—then set off, shoulders squared, stride steady. A faint smear on the smudged sheet caught her glance; rather than discard it, she folded the edge inward, turning the flaw into a narrow border that framed the drawing unexpectedly. Behind her, the fair’s chatter rose and fell like distant surf while a bell marked the passing hour. Ahead, the empty stage waited, its wooden boards catching a wash of amber light. Beside the silent stage, evening light settled over the flattened grass.
