Leo balanced a wide sketch board against his hip while stepping out of the narrow arcade and into the open square. A marble fountain occupied the center, ringed by market stalls that flashed striped fabric in the pale morning glare. He aimed to capture the square’s shifting geometry before noon light flattened every line, hoping the final drawing would match the crisp aesthetic he pictured. Pigeons burst upward as two delivery carts rolled past, and the board wobbled in his grip. An uncertain rhythm of bells from the tram cables clanged overhead, blurring with the traders’ shouts and scattering his first thoughts into static.
Cross-currents of bodies bent the path he planned. Each stride met a fresh eddy of shoppers circling vegetable crates, forcing him to angle sideways, lift the board higher, and narrow his shoulders. A child’s loose kite tail brushed his ear; he ducked, stumbled, and the charcoal stick slipped, clinking onto a metal drain. When he crouched to collect it, a cyclist braked too late. Tires hissed, nudged his elbow, and the sketch board tipped forward. His free hand flew up, steadying the board a finger’s width before it slapped the stones. Nearby heads turned at the small commotion, then flowed on, the wider system of the square realigning without pause.
He reset the charcoal, advanced another meter, and searched for a stable viewpoint facing the bronze stallion statue that reared beside the fountain. Just as he lifted the board for a test outline, a hollow crack snapped across the pavement—a hairline fracture crawled between two tiles. A second, deeper sound followed; water burst through the brittle seam with a wet gasp. The unexpected rupture sent a jet skyward, catching sunlight and spinning it into splintered rain. Shoppers squealed, not from fear but surprise, scattering to avoid the spray. The fountain’s original arc lost dominance; a new, improvised column now drew every gaze, including Leo’s.
The first shock gone, people regrouped. Some laughed at drenched sleeves; others angled phones toward the impromptu fountain. Leo stepped back, boots settling into a shallow ripple that spread from the crack. He lowered the board again, eyes flicking between the stallion’s polished flank and the rising plume. Lines adjusted on the paper; the sudden water became a braided spiral behind the statue, and frisking light danced across its metal chest. When the valve beneath the stones finally surrendered to pressure and the spray eased, sunlight rested on the damp bronze stallion.
