Maya Beside the Evening Ferry-

English 원문
Maya hurried along the wooden pier, steam escaping from the box of pasta she balanced in both hands. The day’s last ferry still idled at the harbor, its lights scattering yellow shapes across rippling water. Dockworkers rolled ropes and metal carts rattled over planks; gulls hung overhead, waiting for leftovers. A thin cloud trailed across the moon, and the scent of diesel mixed with tomato and basil around her knees. She slowed near the gangway, eyes on the dish promised to a friend on the opposite shore.
A sudden gust lifted spray over the railing. Turbulence spread under the gangway, tilting it just as Maya planted a foot. She grabbed the cold iron post, arms tightening in an awkward embrace, and the box slipped sideways. Sauce splattered across her sleeve, yet the lid stayed in place. Behind her, two tourists laughed at their own stumble, while a sailor raised an eyebrow at the wobbling walkway but said nothing. Maya set the box on a bollard, wiped the sleeve with a napkin, and checked a small reserve of grated cheese tucked in a separate jar—it remained dry, so she breathed once and stepped forward again.
The horn sounded, deeper than before. Instead of drawing passengers aboard, it signaled closure; crew members hauled the ramp upward. The timetable had shifted without warning. Murmurs rattled through the queue, then scattered into individual footsteps. A fisherman in a blue coat untied his skiff, planning a quiet return home. Maya’s glance met his; he offered only a shrug, already busy with an oar. She noticed space opening along the pier, the water settling where the ferry engines had worked. An idea flickered—walk the shoreline path and cross by bridge, though it meant a long detour. She lifted the box, warmth seeping through cardboard, and turned toward the landward streetlamps.
Three steps later, the ferry engines roared again. A last-minute decision from the wheelhouse had reversed departure. Crew voices cut through smoke; the ramp eased down, metal clanging against bolts. Passengers dashed back, shoes striking puddles, laughter chasing them. Maya paused, shoulders tightening, then pivoted and joined the ragged line. Ten seconds saved her place. When the deck stopped moving beneath her soles, she rested the pasta box against the cabin wall, drops of sauce dried along its edge. Light from the pier rested on the quiet harbor water.
