Metal shutters rattled open above the underground entrance while pale stripes of daylight reached the tiled stairs. Milo shifted a canvas bag higher on his shoulder and stepped down, shoes tapping a loose rhythm that echoed along the corridor. He aimed to kickstart a new sound collage for his tiny attic studio; the tunnel’s layered clatter promised fresh texture. At the platform he slid a recorder from its foam sleeve, clipped two slim microphones to the railing, and straightened, neck craning toward the far tunnel mouth where distant brakes screeched.
A first train roared past, wind tugging at his jacket. The recorder’s meter leaped, then froze. Batteries dimmed, reels spun once, and the machine stalled. Milo’s eyebrows tightened, hands patting every pocket until a spare pack of cells appeared. Kneeling, he swapped them, but a hard vibration from an arriving service cart bumped the tripod. The impact rattled the left microphone so it drooped toward the tracks. Milo twisted the joint; the screw fought back before easing into place. Above him, announcements blended with rolling cases and hurried footsteps, forming a shifting tide of noise that kept rising and breaking.
A fresh rumble grew deeper than the earlier train. Air shifted; newspapers fluttered. Milo punched record again, this time a steady red light burned. The approaching express carved a pressure wave through the tunnel, and Milo let the microphones ride the wave, fabric of his coat billowing behind him. Just as the engine blurred past, a street drummer on the opposite platform struck a snare in sync with the wheel rhythm. The unplanned layer folded into the track, cymbals flickering like sparks in the roar. Milo’s shoulders lifted, his foot tapping in surprise at the sudden percussion.
Silence returned in fragments: fading wheels, last brush of cymbal, a cough somewhere near the ticket gates. Milo stopped the recorder and glanced at the frozen timer. He unplugged the cables, coiled them with quick turns, and tucked everything back inside the canvas bag. A final train slipstream carried a paper cup along the platform until it toppled beside his boot. Milo nudged it toward a bin and climbed the stairs, head tilted, listening to the sample that still buzzed inside his thoughts. On the empty bench behind him, red digits on the recorder rested steady beside the folded tripod.
