Mila Near the Terrace Lift-

English 원문
Mila balanced a shallow tray of young herbs in both palms and stepped into the atrium of the Riverside Tower. Glass walls framed a bright ribbon of escalator that seemed to ascend forever toward a roof garden twenty floors above. Mid-morning traffic remained sparse; only the soft rollers of suitcase wheels and distant keyboard taps echoed in the space. She placed one foot on the lower step, careful not to jostle the soil that darkened each cell like tiny islands, and the metal track carried her upward with a reassuring purr.
Halfway to the mezzanine, the purr faltered. A brief jolt passed through the handrail, and the entire escalator froze. The moving staircase now felt like a steep shelf under her shoes. Mila shifted her weight, exhaled, and climbed the immobilized steps one by one. A service stair waited at the landing, but its swinging gate resisted her first push. She set down the tray, pressed both shoulders against the bar, and a stiff clang released the latch. The delay scattered footsteps behind her as two office workers diverted toward an elevator bank, leaving the platform quiet once more.
Eight more flights rose beyond the mezzanine, each bordered by panoramic windows. Outside, a silver crane lifted mirrored panels, stacking them like cards against the skyline. Light flickered across polished floors whenever a panel turned. Near the eighteenth level, a courier drone zipped past the windows, its rotors shearing the still air with a crisp rip. The machine slowed, executed a nimble tilt, and settled on an empty bench beside the stairwell. A thin envelope slipped from its cargo grip before the rotors lifted it away again.
A gust squeezed through an open maintenance hatch, catching the envelope and sliding it across smooth tiles. Mila crouched; the tray wobbled, and two sprigs toppled sideways. She steadied the tray with an elbow, pinned the skittering paper under one sneaker, and nudged it safely beneath the tray’s lip. The final stairs opened onto the roof, where planter boxes lined a lattice fence and shadows of slow clouds drifted over fresh soil. She arranged the tray among the boxes, tucked the envelope beside the herbs, and straightened her back.
Sunlight rested across the quiet planter boxes.
