The crowd shifted, narrowing Basil’s path. He edged sideways, but a child chasing a paper boat clipped his ankle; the pot tilted, and the lid rang against the rim. Basil halted, tightened his grip, and adjusted the cloth wrapped around the handles. He advanced again just as the fountain pump hiccupped—the jets dropped, then surged higher, sending a fresh curtain of mist over everyone nearby. Startled vendors ducked; baskets shuffled; space opened. Basil moved through the sudden gap, boots slipping on wet stone. One slide cost him balance, and the pot’s base kissed the ground with a metallic thud. He crouched, steadied it, and found the lid still sealed. When he looked up, applause burst from a nearby street band whose beat had coincided with the clang; bystanders laughed, assuming the sound part of the performance. Basil rolled with the misunderstanding, offered a playful bow, and continued to the waiting tables. Steam settled above the pot and droplets glimmered on the flagstones.
