English 원문
Mara stepped onto the elevated platform just as late-afternoon light slid across the tiled floor. In the crook of her arm rested a paper bag carrying a diminutive wooden box no larger than an orange. She had wound its key before leaving home, and now a delicate lullaby leaked through the bag’s thin seams, weaving between engine rumbles and ticket beeps. She aimed for the far track where a tram waited, doors still open. Between her shoes and the painted arrows, puddles from a brief shower mirrored fluorescent strips overhead. She lengthened her stride, hoping to cross before the warning chime sounded.
Halfway across, a sudden knot of passengers swelled around a timetable screen. Mara angled left, brushing the cold rail. The bag’s handle snagged on iron, and the jerk loosened the box. It slipped free, struck the step, and skittered downward in small, uncertain hops. A susurrus of jackets and umbrellas rose as people adjusted to avoid it. Mara darted after the runaway gift, but the first swipe of her palm sent the box spinning farther, lodging beneath a bench set against the glass wall. The departing tram’s horn blared above, and the platform briefly shuddered as the carriage pulled away without her.
Kneeling, she reached under the bench; fingertips grazed polished wood, missed, tried again. The second attempt found the lid, and a tender touch stilled the motion. The key inside clicked, releasing the lullaby at fuller volume. High, bright notes spiraled upward, slipping through metal beams, mingling with footsteps. Conversation pockets thinned; a toddler paused mid-skip, head tilted. No one spoke about the tune, yet the melody threaded through the station’s ordinary machinery. Mara slid the box back into the bag, standing as the last echo dissolved into the usual drone of wheels and screens.
Her brief delay shifted the rhythm of everything around her. The crowd that had clogged the stairs a moment earlier now drifted toward exits, and clear space opened along the yellow line. Serendipity did not announce itself; it simply existed in the coincidence of an emptier platform and a still-playing song muffled inside paper. Mara stepped aboard the next tram with ease, finding an unclaimed seat beside the window. Rain-smudged lights traced silver ribbons along the glass as the doors sealed. The tram wheels rolled under steady light.
