Silas Before the Glass-

English 원문
Silas entered the public aquarium just as the doors slid open. A profound hush lingered over the main hall; only the distant pump murmured behind the tanks. He lifted a small camera, angling for the first photograph of a newly arrived moon-jelly colony. Overhead lamps spread a pale lattice on the floor, and the water beyond the glass glimmered with faint, iridescent ribbons. The rest of the building—gift shop, café, ticket desk—drifted toward oblivion behind him while he tracked the drifting shapes, adjusting the focus ring with slow, deliberate turns.
A school group pressed in, sneakers squeaking on the tiles. Silas sidestepped, but his camera strap snagged on a stanchion rope. The lens cap clattered, rolled once, and bumped against a bench leg. He knelt, reached, and his sketchbook slipped from under his arm, pages unfurling like paper wings across the polished floor. A guide’s voice floated above the crowd, naming species, yet the words blurred under the low roof of echoing glass. Silas gathered his scattered pages, pressed them flat, and tightened the strap; a quick breath puffed white on the cool pane before him.
Without warning, the overhead lights flickered and went dark. A brief gasp rustled through the corridor; then the tanks took command of the scene. Bioluminescent streaks awakened inside the water, painting a living dreamscape where every pulse of the jellies threw new constellations onto the ceiling. A toddler laughed, arms lifted; others froze, their outlines stitched by shifting aqua light. Silas’s finger hovered, the shutter clicked, and another pulse of color burst—violet, then emerald, then gold—each shade more resplendent than the last. Power returned after a heartbeat, but in that narrow window the hallway changed, each observer welded to the glass as if staring through a window cut in midnight.
Light steadied, humming fixtures reclaimed their usual whiteness, and people drifted toward the staircase with hushed chatter. Silas checked the preview screen: portraits of drifting crowns framed by darkness filled the display. One image carried a faint rainbow halo where two jellies had overlapped, an accident no planning could duplicate. He slipped the camera into its pouch, lifted the sketchbook, and walked toward the next exhibit, shoes tap-tapping in the restored glow.
Soft blue light rested over the quiet water.
