Mira Before Dawn-

English 원문
Silver dew clung to the balcony rail when Mira nudged her small telescope toward the pale horizon. She had spent three slow weekends polishing the mirrors because a distant quasar was predicted to glow just before sunrise. Capturing its ghostly swirl would complete her astronomy project, so a pocket camera waited beside the eyepiece. An old alarm clock ticked loudly, marking the seconds until the predicted flare. Her notes had already begun to branch out across the floor, pages overlapping like soft wings. While porch petunias started to wither under last night’s chill, the sky remained stubbornly blank. Only one faint planet floated above the roofline, drifting like a slow lantern.
A thin cloud drifted over the target zone and blocked the view. Mira carefully tightened the focus wheel; however, the blurred circle refused to sharpen. If she had known the air would turn so damp, she would have covered the lens with plastic earlier. She wiped the glass with a soft cloth, yet bright beads immediately returned and distorted everything. The neighbor’s porch light suddenly flared, cruelly drowning every fragile star inside her shrinking field of view. Mira ducked behind a bamboo screen, but the glare still leaked through narrow gaps. After a pause she raised a cardboard shield; the breeze pushed it aside. The obstacle repeated, and the dark window she needed slipped away again.
Just as the weight crossed her shoulders, sunrise painted the opposite wall gold. A single sunbeam bounced off the neighbor’s metal mailbox and shot straight through the telescope tube. The ray acted like an accidental spotlight, revealing the very streak she chased. The quasar glimmered at the edge of the reddening sky for a brief, delicate moment. A soft gasp escaped the balcony as the image settled on the digital screen. The moment lasted only a few seconds, yet the sensor clicked twice before fading again. A jubilant grin spread across Mira’s face while shutters from distant windows rattled awake. When the cloud rolled back, the telescope stayed steady, and the small instrument rested beside the open notebook.
