Maya pushed the kitchen door at noon, and light fell across the tiles. A loud growl rolled from her stomach, hungry for anything warm. She has opened every cupboard and has checked the fridge. Only a thin loaf that her neighbor gave yesterday waited on the shelf. Its surface looked soft, yet the bread remained frozen solid. She placed a small bowl beside the stove, thinking of vegetable soup hiding in the freezer. The soup had been frozen in odd cubes, pressed tight by the pot. The pot was heavy, and the icy soup block refused to move. When she pressed her knife against the loaf, the blade bounced away. Slice after slice refused to form, while the clock ticked toward afternoon.

Steam suddenly hissed behind her; water inside the kettle had finished boiling. An idea sparked, and she poured a polite quantity over the soup block. The ice cracked, surprising her with a sharp pop. At the same moment, her cat Leo jumped onto the counter. He nudged the handle of the heavy pot. Hot water sloshed, and the bowl slid toward the edge. Maya lunged, catching it with one hand, while her other hand grabbed the loaf like a hammer. The unexpected shock rocked the bread, and a hollow sound answered. The loaf was not bread at all—it was her sister’s painted foam for yesterday’s art class. With a laugh that shook her shoulders, Maya settled for cereal. Milk filled the rescued bowl, and the kitchen finally calmed.
